The Story of Hungry Chaplain

What is it that fuels you? For me, it's God and food! When carefully put together, just like a really good hamburger, the juiciness and the harmony of God revealed in food is just something that I believe everyone should experience and enjoy!

Having gone to seminary, I tried writing a bit about Food Theology in my papers, to the applause and also the rightful reprimand of various seminarians and professors. I must say my thoughts then compared to now are like comparing a raw steak with something that is cooked medium rare, seasoned with clarified butter and salt and pepper.

I thought to myself that one day, I should write a book about Food Theology.

Then, as many things in life are, the idea was shelved.

As I started my ministry as a chaplain in an international boarding school, I ran a cooking club, seeking to explore God through food and its preparation. Oh there were wonderful reflections and discoveries that we made as we contemplated about God while baking our carrot cakes and fried our pizza spring rolls.

The journey of learning as I read more books about Food Theology made me realize that this is a topic that needs more discussion as it is a medium that spans across cultures. Food is a universal experience for humanity, and I believe I have just touched the tip of the iceberg with its exploration. Indeed, it is terra incognita

In 2021, during a staff retreat, a spiritual director advised me to start this journey of reflection about God through Food Theology. I decided to give it a shot.

Hungry Chaplain is truly my own little passion project, gaining more and more traction each day. My hope is that I could engage other thinkers, eaters, and theologians in exploring how we can understand God and His Life for us through food. If anything, I hope to learn from the comments and the posts of others! And in so doing, create a community that shares our love for God and food together.

I hope you enjoy browsing my site and all of the unique content I have to offer.

Read on and have a tasty and satisfying time in Hungry Chaplain!
